If you’re getting quotes for a heat pump in the UK, you’ll encounter MCS almost immediately. Installers mention it. Grant schemes require it. But the specifics of what MCS certification actually covers — and what it doesn’t — are often unclear until something goes wrong.

This guide covers what MCS is, how to verify it for both products and installers, what the scheme requires of an installation, and what to check before you sign a contract.

What MCS is and why it was created

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme is a quality standard for small-scale renewable and low-carbon energy technology in the UK. It was established to address a genuine problem: in the early years of the UK heat pump market, there was no consistent standard for installer competence or installation quality. Installations varied widely. Heating performance claims were difficult to verify. Consumer protection was limited.

MCS addresses this by certifying both:

  • Products (heat pump units, cylinders, controls) against defined performance and safety standards
  • Installers against standards covering technical competence, system design methodology, documentation, and complaints handling

Both need to be certified for an installation to qualify for government support schemes. An MCS-certified installer fitting an uncertified product, or a non-certified installer fitting an MCS-certified product, doesn’t count.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme connection

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) provides grants of £7,500 for air source heat pumps and £7,500 for ground source heat pumps installed in England and Wales. Only MCS-certified installers can issue the BUS voucher required to claim this grant.

The process works like this: the MCS-certified installer submits the installation details to MCS after completion, MCS issues the certificate, and the installer uses that certificate to redeem the Ofgem voucher on your behalf. You never interact with Ofgem directly in most cases — the installer handles the redemption. This means if your installer isn’t MCS-certified, there’s no workaround to access the grant.

The grant covers a substantial portion of a typical heat pump installation cost, which makes MCS certification financially significant: a £7,500 grant on a £10,000–£15,000 installation is not a minor detail.

What MCS requires of an installation

MCS doesn’t just certify that an installer has done a training course. The scheme sets standards for the full installation process:

System design documentation: The installer must produce a heat loss calculation for your property using an approved methodology (typically to BS EN 12831). The heat pump must be sized based on this calculation, not estimated by eye or rule of thumb. Undersizing causes the system to run continuously and fail to heat the property in cold snaps; oversizing causes short cycling and reduced efficiency.

Hot water cylinder sizing: If the heat pump provides domestic hot water (most do), the cylinder must be correctly sized for the household’s demand. MCS MIS 3005 specifies the minimum sizing methodology.

Commissioning record: The installer must complete and provide a commissioning record showing that the system was set up and tested correctly — flow temperatures, pump settings, controls configuration. This document is your evidence that the installation was completed to standard.

Handover documentation: MCS requires installers to provide user instructions explaining how to operate the system, what settings mean, and what to do if something goes wrong. This sounds basic, but in practice, a significant proportion of heat pump performance complaints stem from users operating systems incorrectly because nobody explained them.

Workmanship warranty: MCS installers must provide a minimum two-year workmanship warranty on the installation itself (separate from the manufacturer’s equipment warranty).

How to verify MCS certification

The MCS certificate database is publicly searchable at mcscertified.com. Before signing any contract, verify both:

Product certification: Search for the specific heat pump model the installer proposes to use. The database shows which products are certified and to which MCS product standard. If the model isn’t in the database, the installation won’t be eligible for the grant.

Installer certification: Search for the installer by company name or postcode. The database shows their current certification status, which technologies they’re certified for (air source, ground source, heat pumps for social housing, etc.), and their certification body. Certification must be current — lapsed certification means no voucher.

Don’t accept verbal confirmation that a company is MCS certified. The database takes 30 seconds to check. Some companies are MCS certified for solar PV but not heat pumps — the certification is technology-specific.

What MCS doesn’t guarantee

MCS sets a floor, not a ceiling. Certification means the installer has demonstrated a baseline level of competence and agreed to operate within the scheme’s standards. It doesn’t mean:

  • The installer is experienced with your specific property type (listed buildings, older solid-wall properties, and properties with very high heat loss all require additional expertise)
  • The system will achieve the Seasonal Coefficient of Performance (SCOP) the installer quoted
  • There will be no problems with the installation

The scheme includes a complaints procedure: if you have a dispute with an MCS-certified installer and can’t resolve it directly, you can raise a complaint through MCS, which routes it to the certification body. The certification body can investigate and impose sanctions including suspension. This is meaningful consumer protection that doesn’t exist outside the MCS framework.

Before you sign

Checklist for evaluating installer quotes:

  • Verify the installer’s MCS certification on the database — check the specific technology category (heat pump, not just “microgeneration”)
  • Verify the proposed product is MCS certified
  • Ask to see the heat loss calculation before accepting the quote — the system size should come from this calculation
  • Confirm the quote includes commissioning and a handover session
  • Ask for the workmanship warranty details in writing
  • Check online reviews and, if possible, speak to previous customers who had similar properties

MCS certification is necessary but not sufficient. The best indicator of quality remains evidence of successful installations on similar properties, combined with a company that’s willing to explain its system design choices in terms you can understand.
