Smart meters have been around in the UK for over a decade, yet roughly a third of households still haven’t had one installed. If you’ve been ignoring the letters from your energy supplier asking you to book an installation, it’s worth reconsidering — especially in 2026, when smart meter access unlocks meaningful savings through time-of-use tariffs that simply aren’t available otherwise.

So what does a smart meter actually do, and is there any reason not to get one?

The Basics

A smart meter replaces your existing gas and electricity meters with units that automatically send readings to your supplier. No more estimated bills, no more sending manual readings, no more surprise catch-up charges when the engineer finally visits.

Alongside the meter itself, you get an In-Home Display (IHD) — a small screen that shows your near-real-time energy usage and what it’s costing. In theory it helps you see what’s using energy. In practice, most people look at it for a week and then leave it in a drawer. The meter itself is where the real value is.

The current generation of smart meters in the UK are called SMETS2 (Second Generation Smart Metering Systems). Earlier SMETS1 meters had a reputation for going “dumb” — losing their smart functionality — when you switched supplier. SMETS2 meters solved this by using a central communications network (managed by DCC, the Data Communications Company) rather than supplier-specific connectivity, so they keep working regardless of who you’re with.

Why It Actually Matters Now

The most compelling reason to get a smart meter in 2026 isn’t the IHD or the automatic readings — it’s tariff access.

The cheapest electricity tariffs currently available in the UK require a functioning smart meter that sends half-hourly consumption data. Octopus Energy’s Agile tariff, Intelligent Octopus Go, and comparable offerings from OVO and British Gas all require SMETS2 installation. Without one, you’re locked out of time-of-use pricing — which, if you have an EV or battery storage, can knock hundreds of pounds off your annual bill.

With the July 2026 Ofgem price cap at approximately 24.5p/kWh for standard electricity, switching to a smart tariff with overnight rates around 7p/kWh represents a substantial saving for anyone who can shift consumption to off-peak windows. You can’t access those rates without a smart meter.

What the Installation Involves

Your supplier installs the meter — it’s free. The engineer visits typically take between 30 minutes and two hours depending on the type of meter being replaced and your property setup. You’ll need to be home during the appointment.

During the installation, your electricity (and gas, if you have gas too) will be off briefly — usually just a few minutes. The engineer will commission the meters and test that the IHD is connected before leaving.

There’s no disruption to your supply after that, and no ongoing action required on your part.

The Concerns (and Whether They Hold Up)

A few objections come up repeatedly:

“They’ll cut me off remotely.” Smart meters have remote disconnect functionality in theory, but suppliers are bound by Ofgem rules that restrict when they can disconnect customers. In practice, remote disconnection is used as an alternative to debt-related physical disconnection — the same situations where a traditional meter would also have been disconnected. If you pay your bills, this isn’t a risk.

“They’ll charge me more based on when I use power.” You opt into time-of-use tariffs — they’re not imposed on you. A smart meter on a standard variable tariff works exactly like a traditional meter from a pricing perspective; it just sends readings automatically.

“My SMETS1 meter went dumb and I don’t want to go through that again.” Fair enough frustration. SMETS2 meters don’t have this problem — they operate on a standardised national network. If you had a SMETS1 meter that went dumb, you can request an upgrade to SMETS2 from your supplier.

“I’ve heard they’re inaccurate.” Smart meters are subject to the same Ofgem accuracy requirements as traditional meters. There are occasional isolated reports of inaccurate readings, but they’re not a systemic issue — and if you notice a discrepancy, you can raise it with your supplier or Ofgem.

How to Book One

Contact your energy supplier directly — phone, app, or website. All major suppliers (British Gas, Octopus, OVO, E.ON Next, EDF, Scottish Power) are obligated to offer smart meter installation under government rollout targets. Most have online booking tools.

If you’re a renter, you can still request a smart meter installation — it’s your right to have one, and your landlord cannot block it. The meter belongs to the supply infrastructure, not the property.

If you’ve previously declined a smart meter and changed your mind, or if your SMETS1 meter needs upgrading to SMETS2, both requests go through the same supplier contact route.

One Thing to Check

After installation, verify that your supplier is receiving half-hourly data — not just daily reads. In your supplier’s app or online account, look for consumption data broken down into half-hour slots. If you’re seeing daily totals only, your meter may not be enrolled in the half-hourly data programme, which is required for smart tariff eligibility. Ask your supplier to check.
