Gridserve

Coverage: Large network with significant presence in Scotland, Northern England, and local authority car parks across the UK. Also operates workplace charging.
Speed: Mix of 7kW, 22kW, 50kW. Legacy of slower chargers from the early network build-out.
Pricing: Varies significantly by location and tariff. Some council-operated sites are cheaper than commercial networks.
Reliability: Mixed. The network’s age and diversity of hardware means uptime varies by site. Checking recent Zap-Map reviews before relying on a specific Mer location is advisable.
Practical Strategy for UK EV Drivers
For motorway routes: Plan around Gridserve Electric Highway sites at MSAs. Use ABRP (A Better Route Planner) to route through them. BP Pulse Pulse Ultra hubs are a reasonable alternative if Gridserve isn’t available.
For city driving without home charging: Pod Point at supermarkets for free top-ups during shopping; Osprey or Gridserve for paid rapid when you need a meaningful charge quickly.
For reliability-critical charging: Gridserve and Osprey. If a charge point failing would strand you, these two networks have the track records to trust.
Apps worth having: Zap-Map (real-time reliability reports), ABRP (route planning), and each network’s own app for payment. Since contactless is now mandatory at rapid chargers, you can charge without any app at compliant sites — but apps still give you pricing and availability in advance.
CCS vs CHAdeMO: CHAdeMO (used by Nissan Leaf and some older vehicles) is rapidly declining on UK networks. If your vehicle uses CHAdeMO and you rely on public charging, verify availability before long trips. The network is transitioning almost entirely to CCS (Combined Charging System).
