Kiwa Energy UK has announced it’s stopping MCS product certification and will close its operations later in 2026. For most homeowners, this probably sounds like inside baseball — something that happens in the background of the renewable energy industry and doesn’t affect you directly. To be honest, for many it won’t. But if you’re about to buy solar panels, a heat pump, or a solar thermal system, it’s worth understanding what’s changed and why it matters.

MCS certification — the Microgeneration Certification Scheme — is the UK’s quality mark for small-scale renewable energy. It has two sides: installer certification (your installer must be MCS-certified) and product certification (the equipment they install must be MCS-certified). Both are required for your installation to qualify for government grants, including the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) for heat pumps. Kiwa was one of the bodies authorised to run the product certification side. It’s now leaving that space.

Why This Actually Matters

The immediate impact isn’t on homeowners who already have systems installed. If you have a heat pump or solar array that was installed using Kiwa-certified products and your installation is already registered with MCS, you’re fine. The certification doesn’t expire when Kiwa exits.

Where it gets complicated is for manufacturers and importers whose products were certified through Kiwa. When Kiwa ceases operations, those product certifications need to be transferred to another MCS-approved certification body. If a manufacturer doesn’t complete that transfer before Kiwa closes, their products won’t carry a valid MCS product certificate — and without that, an installer can’t use them on a BUS application.

For homeowners, the practical risk is this: you choose a product, your installer quotes for it, but by the time the work happens the product certificate has lapsed because the manufacturer hasn’t sorted out the transfer. This isn’t a theoretical risk — it’s the kind of administrative gap that can catch people out during a transition period.

What to Check Before You Buy

The cleanest way to protect yourself is to verify that the specific product you’re being quoted for has a current, valid MCS product certificate at the time of installation — not just when you sign the contract.

You can check product certificates directly on the MCS database at the MCS website. Each listed product shows which certification body holds its certificate. If you see Kiwa listed, ask your installer or the manufacturer whether the transfer to a new certification body has been completed.

The MCS-approved product certification bodies that remain operational include Bureau Veritas, ENCO, FCBA, MCS itself (for certain categories), and others. Products being transferred from Kiwa should end up certified through one of these alternatives.

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme Connection

This matters particularly if you’re applying for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which provides £7,500 towards an air or ground source heat pump and requires both an MCS-certified installer and MCS-certified product. If the product certificate is invalid at the time of application, the grant won’t pay out.

Given that heat pump installations are taking three to six months from initial survey to completed installation in many parts of the country right now, there’s a meaningful window where a product’s certification status could change between your quote and your installation.

The simplest advice: ask your installer to confirm the product is MCS-certified and to confirm which certification body holds the current certificate. If it’s Kiwa, ask when the transfer is expected to complete and whether they can offer an alternative product as a backup option.

What the Broader Market Looks Like

Kiwa’s exit comes at an unusual moment for the UK renewable energy industry. On one hand, 2026 looks like a record year for solar installations — the UK is forecast to add five to five-and-a-half gigawatts of new rooftop solar capacity, and the country has now passed two million MCS-certified solar installations. Demand for heat pumps is also picking up as the Warm Homes Plan starts to take effect, with the government having committed £15 billion across a range of home upgrade schemes.

On the other hand, the UK already has an installer shortage. Adding product certification complexity into the mix is, frankly, unhelpful timing. Manufacturers scrambling to transfer certifications, with installers trying to navigate which products have valid certificates at any given moment, creates friction in a market that’s already stretched.

The MCS organisation itself has been clear that the scheme continues and that product certification remains a requirement. Kiwa’s departure doesn’t undermine MCS — it just changes which body holds specific product certificates.

The Practical Takeaway

If you’re buying solar panels or a heat pump in the next twelve months, add one question to your checklist: “Is this specific product MCS-certified, and through which body?” Your installer should be able to answer this immediately. If they can’t, that’s a sign to ask again and wait for a definitive answer before signing anything.

This isn’t cause for alarm — it’s cause for a five-minute check. The vast majority of products currently on the market will have sorted their certification transfer well before Kiwa’s closure date. But in a sector where a lapsed certificate can mean losing a £7,500 grant, it’s worth five minutes of verification.
