A ground-mounted system uses a steel or aluminium frame installed in your garden, anchored either with concrete footings or driven ground screws. The panels are bolted to the frame at the optimal tilt angle (typically 30–35° in the UK), cabled to an outdoor isolator, and then connected to the building via an armoured underground cable that enters through the wall.

The system connects to your home’s consumer unit and operates identically to a roof system: excess generation exports to the grid (earning Smart Export Guarantee payments), and the inverter prioritises powering your home’s loads directly.

Planning Permission in England

Under permitted development rights (Schedule 2, Part 14 of the Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015), ground-mounted solar is allowed without planning permission if all of the following apply:

  • The installation is within the curtilage of a house (your garden/land, not a commercial property)
  • The total surface area of the panels doesn’t exceed 9 square metres
  • No panel extends more than 4 metres above the ground
  • No panel is installed within 5 metres of a highway boundary
  • The installation is more than 5 metres from any boundary of the curtilage
  • The land is not within a Site of Special Scientific Interest

Practical Advantages

Easier maintenance. You don’t need to access your roof to clean panels or inspect connections. Ground-mounted panels can be hosed down in 20 minutes.

Expandable. Adding panels to a ground-mounted frame (subject to planning) is simpler than a roof installation, where the roof structure and access costs constrain expansion.

No roof penetrations. Roof waterproofing around cable entries and panel fixings is a common source of future issues. Ground mounts eliminate this concern entirely.

Retrofit battery integration. If you’re adding battery storage later, the cable run from a ground array gives you flexibility in inverter and battery placement that roof installations sometimes don’t.

Practical Disadvantages

Takes up garden space. A 6kW system occupies roughly 12m² of usable garden space, plus clearance around the frame. It will cast a shadow — plan the location carefully to avoid shading vegetable beds or children’s play areas.

Livestock and machinery risk. If you have animals or regularly use garden machinery, the exposed frame and panels need protection. Deer, chickens, and strimmer debris are common causes of damage.

Aesthetic impact. Some homeowners and neighbours find ground arrays visually intrusive. If your relationship with neighbours or a residents’ association is sensitive, factor this in.

Insurance. Notify your home insurer before installation. Ground-mounted systems usually require explicit endorsement on your buildings policy.

Is It Worth It?

Ground-mounted solar makes good financial sense when:

  1. Your roof is unsuitable (orientation, shading, or structural condition) and you have south-facing garden space
  2. You have more garden than roof capacity and want to maximise your generating potential
  3. You want a system you can easily maintain without roof access
  4. The additional cost premium is offset by meaningfully higher generation from optimal siting

For most homes with a reasonable south-facing roof, roof installation is still the more cost-effective choice. But if your roof isn’t suitable and you have the garden space, a well-sited ground-mounted system will outperform a compromised roof installation and deliver a comparable payback period despite the higher upfront cost.
